Key Largo Hotels Offer Pilot Whale Rehab Volunteers Special Rates / WHALES STILL NEED HELP!
Key Largo Hotels Offer Pilot Whale Rehab Volunteers Special Rates

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys - Several Key Largo hotels are offering reduced-rate accommodations for visitors who want to join round-the-clock efforts to rehabilitate three surviving pilot whales convalescing at the Florida Keys-based Marine Mammal Conservancy.

The “voluntourism” initiative is being aided with specially priced $69 (plus tax) per night rooms for visitors who sign up as volunteers.

When the traveler completes at least one four-hour shift, MMC representatives will award the traveler a voucher. The voucher is good for the traveler’s stay for up to five days Sunday night through Thursday night, and must be presented to the hotel in order to receive the special rate.

The reduced-rate program is focused on weekdays, because that is when the need for manpower is greatest. Visitors arriving in Key Largo for the volunteer effort are encouraged to sign up for multiple shifts.

As many as 20 volunteers are needed per four-hour shift to assist with a wide range of activities at MMC, located at mile marker 102.1 bayside. Volunteers help with everything from actually being in the water to support the whales (must be 18 or older), to land-based tasks such as answering phones. Shore duties can be performed by teens under 18.

The following Key Largo hotels are part of the program:

Bayside Inn http://www.baysidekeylargo.com/ 305-451-4450

Bay Cove Motel http://www.baycovemotel.com/ 305-451-1686

Boatel http://www.keylargohouseboat.com/ 305-766-0871

Key West Inn http://www.supertelinns.com/ 305-451-5081

Marina del Mar http://www.marinadelmarkeylargo.com/ 305-451-4107

The accommodations list also is available at www.fla-keys.com/volunteer and more properties may be added in the future.

Holiday blackout dates for the special rate include Sunday, July 3, and Sunday, Sept. 3. Advance reservations are required, and the lodging property must be advised that guests are planning to volunteer.

The three whales were transferred to MMC in a temperature-controlled Publix Super Markets semitrailer several days after they survived a May 5 stranding off the Lower Keys.

(the following submitted by ANDY NEWMAN)

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys -- Officials at a Florida Keys-based marine mammal rehabilitation center Saturday euthanized the third of seven surviving pilot whales that stranded May 5 off the lower Florida Keys.

A female calf, in critical condition since the stranding, did not respond to treatment for kidneys that began failing several days ago, said Robert Lingenfelser, of the Marine Mammal Conservancy. Officials decided to relieve the whale of further suffering.

A necropsy is to be conducted by a MMC veterinarian and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries personnel.

One other whale remains in critical condition and one is stable.

Lingenfelser said volunteers are still needed to help rehabilitate remaining whales.

MMC personnel euthanized the first surviving pilot whale May 13 and a second May 25. Two were released two days after the stranding.

Florida Keys residents who  want to learn more about Cortical Field Re-education, now's the chance!

The classes cover techniques to increase pain-free movement and ease in the body while performing daily activities and sports. The information covered in the class is based on the cutting edge learning method of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais.

Students will be guided through a series of gentle, organic movements that recover comfort, balance and flexibility by re-awakening connections in the brain (neuroplasticity) we had as a baby, but were lost along the way.

Over time, our habits, athletic injuries, common accidents and daily stress dampened the efficiency of our  walking, running, jumping, bending, reaching, sitting and other  daily movements. "Rebooting" your nervous system and brain with CFR is like defragmenting a computer.  You can move easier and get back to your active lifestyle within hours.

Take advantage of FKCC continuing education's Introduction to Cortical Field Re-Education in your area. You will be delighted to learn that what you've been attributing to "aging" or thought was "impossible" is just a lesson away!

Learn more about this simple, intelligent solution to being pain free and feeling younger  in the 9 minute introductory video below.

Forbidden Broadway

ForbiddenBroadwayPlaybill

Forbidden Broadway, written and conceived by Gerard Alessandrini

This Off-Broadway satirical musical revue has been running in various versions in New York for 25 years. Eleven albums have been recorded of the show. It sharply spoofs show tunes, characters and plots of popular Broadway musicals with snappy lyrics and fabulous costumes. In 2006, the show was awarded Tony honors for Excellence in Theatre. Forbidden Broadway has been seen in more than 200 US cities as well as London, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney and now comes to Key West! Red Barn Theatre's production is the first one to be liscensed to use a local cast.

Audience favorites Eric Cole, J.B. McLendon, Gayla Morgan and Marjorie Paul-Shook make up the cast of this hilarious musical evening.

Becky Barta, veteran of many Forbidden Broadway shows, will direct.

RED

January 18 - 28

Red Playbill

 Red by John Logan

This is a special ten-performance run of the acclaimed 2010 Tony Award-winning play. Red is a searing portrait of the master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and his young assistant. Ambition and vulnerability go hand in hand as Rothko tries to create his crowning achievement that could also become his undoing.

"[Red is] intense and exciting. It's impossible not to feel thrilled." Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Directed by Carole MacCartee

God of Carnage

February 7 - March 10

God of Carnage Playbill
God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza

Winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, this Broadway smash hit is a comedy of manners without the manners. Two couples meet to discuss an altercation on the playground between their eleven year-old sons. Civilized manners soon give way to a rumble in the living room as all hell breaks loose in this very, very funny play about the primitive tendencies that lurk just below the surface in us all.

The stellar cast of Bob Bowersox, Mimi McDonald, Annie Miners and George Murphy will make this an evening of theatre you won't soon forget.

"Never underestimate the pleasure of watching really good actors behaving terribly... It incites the kind of laughter that comes from the gut. [God of Carnage is]satisfying primitive entertainment with an intellectual veneer." - Ben Brantley, The New York Times

God of Carnage also won the Olivier Award in London for Best New Comedy and will be directed by Joy Hawkins.

Match

March 20 - April 14

Match 2 Playbill

Match by Stephen Belber

This Broadway hit stars the incomparable and always hysterical Tom Luna as Tobi Powell, an eccentric and endearing dancer, choreographer and teacher. A married couple arrives at his apartment to interview him about his life, but it is soon evident that their agenda is as multi-layered as Tobi's life story.

"Uproariously funny, deeply moving, enthralling theatre. Belber's Match has great beauty and tenderness and abounds in wit." - The New York Daily News

Directed by Joy Hawkins

Short Attention Span Theatre and

Key West Burlesque

April 24 - May 30

SAST Landon Erin Marky

This will be another fun-filled six weeks of hot new 10-minute plays paired with the sultry naughty but nice burlesque. It is a perfect end to a fabulous season. Enjoy as Key West's youngest and brightest lights light up the Barn stage in this spring spectacular!

Frank Garner honored!

At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Craig Cates honored retired Chairman of the Art in Public Places Board Frank Garner by naming a day in his honor. Because Garner retired on January 18th, that is the day that bears his name.

Garner served as a board member and chairman of that board from 1999 until 2011.

“Little did I realize, on that day 12 years ago,” Garner told the commissioners, “that my life would be totally changed… We had a study group for one whole year to put together the guidelines. From that I started really serving the city that I love so dearly.”

Garner recalled the day when the late City Commissioner Jeremy Anthony appointed him to the position, and he lauded the commission for passing an ordinance that establishes a funding source for Art in Public Places.

“I hope to see lots of wonderful art on my island – on your island – because of you,” he told the commission.

KEYS UNVEILS SMART PHONE COMPATIBLE WEBSITE
KEYS UNVEILS SMART PHONE COMPATIBLE WEBSITE             KEY WEST – Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) web site, www.KeysEnergy.com, is now smart phone compatible. In order to access KEYS’ smart phone compatible site, customers need simply enter www.KeysEnergy.com into the browser of their smart phone. Through the magic of technology and cellular signals, the website is able to detect how it is being accessed and will display the appropriate version of itself.Customers will notice the smart phone compatible version of KEYS’ website has a similar color scheme and feel to KEYS’ traditional website along with almost all of the same content - now in a format to allow for ease of viewing from mobile devices. “When we began developing this mobile site, we looked into the creation of an actual Apple ‘App’ customers could download from iTunes,” said Julio J. Barroso, KEYS’ Communications/Marketing Coordinator. He added that KEYS, “did not go down this route for a couple reasons, mainly due to cost and the fact that the ‘App’ would have worked for Apple products, but it would have had compatibility issues with other mobile devices our customers may use.”Barroso went on to add that, “for those customers with Apple products, once they access the mobile site from their device they can select to ‘add it to home screen’ as an icon for future reference and in a round about way have created their very own KEYS’ ‘App’.            “The creation of our smart phone compatible website further improves the ability of our customers to remain connected with KEYS whenever and wherever it is most convenient for them,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager & CEO.             The utility first launched its website in the mid-1990s, with major redesigns taking place in 2002 to coincide with its name change from City Electric System to KEYS and again in 2004 to accommodate expanded website offerings. In late 2010 it underwent a redesign to offer expanded features designed to improve usability.
