Over two decades ago, my dad and I were driving around Manhattan. He played Tom Waits all the time, when other kids' dads played Elvis. I asked him why he didn't listen to Elvis as much as them. He said, "There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who know Tom Waits, and those who don't. That's how you distinguish the lucky people from the unlucky ones." It's 20 years later, and that's still the wisest thing I ever heard about Mr. Waits.
